How I Start a New Month

I love a new month! Today I want to share how I start my month, both financially and personally.

First, I review the previous month.

I make sure that my budget is balanced with my bank accounts. I look at what was spent in each category. I do this with my husband so we are on the same page.

Then I fill out a spreadsheet that tracks our monthly expenses and savings. We call it the “savings tracker”.

Finally, I journal about these questions:

  • How was my money spent? Did I stick to my plan (budget)?
  • How much money did I save?
  • What worked? What didn’t?
  • What did I accomplish this month?
  • What am I most proud of?
  • What was most challenging?
  • What lessons did I learn AND apply?
  • What am I grateful for?

Now I think about the new month:

  • How do I want to spend my money? (Fill out or review the budget before the month begins.)
  • What is coming up this month for irregular expenses?
  • What do I want to intentionally accomplish (savings, debt payment, personal goals)?

It’s never too late to do this!

If you don’t have a budget, grab the one I use HERE. It’s an awesome tool and so much easier than you think to set up a budget. I can help you if you get stuck.

Being intentional with our finances and our life is the key to getting what we want. If we aren’t aiming for something, we’ll miss the target every time.
